THE ISSUE OF PLAGIARISM
Without a doubt, the most damaging thing a student can do is plagiarize a paper or essay. Colleges and universities generally have a zero tolerance policy for incidents of plagiarism. While it is understood that students who are caught plagiarizing in a course will fail the course, the punitive damages do not stop there. More than likely, the student will be expelled from the university. Worst of all, the charge of plagiarism will stay on their record. This charge will be exposed when the student applies for another university. When it is discovered that the applicant had been expelled from a previous university for plagiarism, it is extremely doubtful that the student would be accepted. In short, getting caught for plagiarism will end a student's academic career. This begs the question why do so many students commit plagiarism if they know the consequences are so severe? The answer is because many students commit plagiarism without even knowing they have done so!
If you were to ask a student what is plagiarism they would generally respond plagiarism is passing off someone else's work as your own. This is an accurate assessment. If you were to ask the student for an example of plagiarism they might respond it would be an act of taking someone else's essay and submitting it as your own. Again, this would be accurate, but it is not a complete assessment of what is considered plagiarism! This is because even partially submitting pieces of another paper is plagiarism. Also, even if you paraphrased someone else's work you have committed plagiarism because submitting the paper as your own work is also a form of plagiarism. Again, most students do not realize this and it is critical to point out that ignorance regarding the definition of plagiarism is categorically not a valid defense if you are accused of plagiarism! This is why it is critical to make sure a paper is completely free of all instances of plagiarism!
It is also important to point out what is not plagiarism. Probably the most common example of what is not plagiarism is "common knowledge". That is, anything that is generally known does not have to be sourced. This is because most people know the information anyway and it probably appears in so many references that pointing to a single reference would be somewhat unnecessary. For example, if you point out that George Washington was the first president of the United States, you would not have to cite this information since it falls under the category of common knowledge. However, if you reference the notion that Washington opposed certain bills that were written by the Congress then you would have to cite the source.
Again, proper citation is the key to avoiding plagiarism. This means a paper must contain a solid and accurate bibliography as well as footnotes, endnotes, etc. As long as you site any sources you use you are not committing plagiarism since you are making no claims of any material that is not your own. Of course, it is also important that the paper contain significant amounts of your own original writing. Creating a research paper that is little more than a collective string of quotes can be nothing more than a poorly written paper.
